Whole house generator sizing for Latham subdivision homes
Latham's subdivisions, from the older streets near Route 9 to the newer ones off Route 7, are where generator sizing gets underestimated. A modern two-story colonial carries a lot of load that a 1960s ranch didn't: central air, a second fridge in the garage, a finished basement with a sump pump, a home office, sometimes an EV charger.
None of that rules out whole-house coverage. It just means the installer needs to see the house, not guess from the square footage. Some loads, like an EV charger or a second AC system, can be managed so they don't all start at once, which can keep the generator a size smaller. Read our generator sizing guide before the site visit and you'll have better answers ready.
Latham power outages: what actually goes dark
Your gas furnace still needs electricity. Without it, the blower, controls and igniter stop, and the house cools fast in a January ice storm. Other things a Latham outage takes down:
- The sump pump in the finished basement
- The fridge and chest freezer
- Wi-Fi and the home office
- The garage door opener on the only door you use
A home standby generator starts on its own through an automatic transfer switch, so the house switches over whether you're home, at work or away for the weekend.
Most Latham subdivisions have natural gas, which means no tank to fill. The installer still checks that your gas meter can carry the furnace, water heater, range and generator together. If it can't, the utility may need to upgrade it, so ask about that early in the quote.
Generator placement and noise between Latham houses
In a Latham subdivision, the neighbor's bedroom window can be close to the best pad spot. The installer has to clear your own windows, doors and vents by code, and a good one will also think about where the exhaust and noise go next door.
Two habits keep neighbors happy. Set the weekly exercise run for midday, not early morning. And if noise worries you, compare sound levels when choosing between brands; our Generac vs Kohler comparison covers the general differences.
Generator maintenance after your Latham install
A standby unit that sits untouched for two years is the one that won't start in the next storm. Plan on yearly service: oil and filter, battery check, spark plugs and a test run under load. Fall, before ice storm season, is the sensible time to book it. See generator maintenance for what a tune-up covers.
